Shopify Knowledge Base App: What It Actually Does (And Why You Should Set It Up)

If you've heard about the Shopify Knowledge Base app and gone looking for information, you're probably more confused than when you started. The documentation isn't clear, and most articles out there describe the wrong thing entirely.

So let's clear it up.

It's not what most people think

The Shopify Knowledge Base app is not a help centre you display on your website. It doesn't create FAQ pages your customers can browse. It works completely behind the scenes.

Think of it as your store's briefing document for AI.

As more shoppers use AI assistants to research products and ask questions before they buy, those AI tools need accurate information about your store. Shopify Knowledge Base is how you control what they say.

What it actually does

Shopify automatically pulls facts from your store settings and turns them into FAQs. Things like your return policy, shipping destinations, and customer account options. Those FAQs are then used by AI shopping agents to answer questions about your store accurately.

You can review the auto-generated FAQs, edit them, and add your own. You can also see which questions shoppers are asking that the AI can't answer yet. That's where it gets genuinely useful.

Those unanswered questions are a goldmine. They tell you exactly where your store information is unclear or missing. Fix those gaps, and you're improving both your AI presence and your store content at the same time.

Should every Shopify store install it?

Yes. It's free, it takes about 20 minutes to set up properly, and it's only going to matter more as AI shopping grows.

The one thing to watch: don't just install it and leave the auto-generated content as is. Those FAQs now speak for your brand. Review them for accuracy, check the tone, and make sure they sound like you. Treat them like real copy, because they are.

What it won't do

If you want a visible FAQ section or help centre on your storefront for customers to browse, you'll need a separate app for that. Shopify Knowledge Base isn't built for that purpose. It's a different tool for a different job.

How to get started

Find it in the Shopify App Store, search for Knowledge Base. Install it, review the auto-generated FAQs, fill in the gaps, and check back occasionally to see what questions are coming in unanswered.

It's a small setup job with long-term payoff. Worth doing.
